Travel Demand Management

Travel Demand Management is subject to numerous definitions but recent Opus project experience has defined TDM as “a set of tools to offer people better travel information and opportunities and help people choose to reduce their need to travel especially by car. TDM is wide-ranging and covers tools and techniques ranging from land use planning to educating workplaces on the benefits of introducing parking management systems.”

Opus has a long standing capability in the provision and planning of travel choices in work on passenger transport planning, and planning alternatives like walking and cycling. Opus has gained recent national recognition as market leaders in their field in New Zealand in the area of travel behavioural change, particularly creating Travel Plans.

Travel Plans are typically a package of practical measures to encourage visitors and employees to choose alternatives to the private car. Travel Plans are designed to encourage employers to reduce car use for travel to work and for travel for business. Travel Plans are widely applied throughout Europe and North America and are a growing in use in New Zealand. Opus has been actively involved with local governments to produce travel planning processes for workplaces in the Auckland region. We have undertaken numerous Travel Plans locally, for both local councils and private organisations.
