Flood modelling, Celtic Manor, United Kingdom

Opus is undertaking major work at The Celtic Manor Resort, in South Wales which will host the Ryder Cup in 2010.
The longstanding work at Celtic Manor saw Opus UK Operations Director, Alun Parfitt undertake the civil works associated with design for the Wentwood Hills course. Because of its large changes in grade, and consequent spectator bottlenecks, the Wentwood Hills course was deemed unsuitable for the unique demands of The Ryder Cup so it was agreed that a new course would be purpose-built.

Flood modelling, East Newport, United Kingdom

Opus continues to be commissioned to undertake flood defence studies as part of their framework with the Welsh Development Agency (WDA).
Opus undertook combined one and two-dimensional flood modelling for the planned £40million City Reach housing development in Newport. The modelling was able to demonstrate that the site could be developed and would provide a degree of flood protection to East Newport in line with TAN (15).  Opus is now providing full structural as well as civil engineering design for the housing project.
Opus is also carrying out a study for WDA on Towyn in North-West Wales. Towyn saw serious flooding in 1990 in which thousands of people were evacuated from their homes when gale force winds and a high tide caused the sea defence barriers to fail.  Opus’ study sets out to determine the flood risk faced by the area.
