Opus is providing the engineering design for a new leading-edge mental health facility at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Opus has worked at the hospital, for North East Wales NHS Trust, since the construction of the hospital in the early 1980s.
The original commission was for the design of a single building, but the plans evolved and the client required two separate buildings. The original surface car parking was forced to give way to accommodate the additional building and provided Opus the opportunity to also design a multi-storey car park.
The buildings, quadrant shaped on plan, are linked via a glazed corridor and feature open courtyards at first floor level, which will be used for patient relaxation areas.
The car park is a multi-decked structure and features six levels of parking. An access ramp, to allow vehicle access from the first floor level, and a pedestrian link-bridge to the hospital building have been added.
A key requirement of the client was the phased delivery of the scheme, with early completion of the car park works
