Earith Sluice, Cambridgeshire, United Kindom

Country: United Kingdom
Key Area: Water
Services: Asset Management,Civil Engineering,Geotechnical Engineering

Opus is working with the Environment Agency to carry out remedial and refurbishment works to a sluice, which acts as a flood defence, at Earith in Cambridgeshire. The work will ensure that current levels of flood defence can continue to be provided for over 50 years to come and is part of the Agency’s Asset Systems Management works programme. The river bed, in front of the sluice, has eroded due to the fast flowing water from the River Great Ouse (one of the longest rivers in the UK) being diverted through the structure. The effect of the scour had caused the sheet piled wall to become unstable leading to operational issues. To prevent these issues from worsening the following is being undertaken over a two year period:

  • Construction of a new concrete scour apron in front of the sluice, supported by a new sheet piled wall and rock armour
  • Installation of new anchor piles and tie rods, to support the existing abutment walls
  • Replacement of several mechanical and electrical parts
