New sustainable solution to reline Soham Lode
A large stretch of the Soham Lode was at risk of catastrophic failure and was classified as emergency works. The final solution also had to accommodate breeding water voles.
The most cost effective solution was to reline the Lode during the summer months when there was lower flow in the river channel. We used a new solution in the UK, a flexible geo-composite waterproof liner, which negated the need to import additional soil for use as sub-grade lining, making a truly sustainable solution.
A delay caused by the relocation of 134 voles, under licence from Natural England, caused the works to be extended over the Christmas period (one of the coldest on record). Despite this, and through close working with the contractor, we minimised the risk and still came in under the target price.
