Western Bay of Plenty Lifelines Earthquake Hazard Study, New Zealand

Country: New Zealand
Key Area: Other Infrastructure
Services: GIS,Seismic Engineering,Structural Engineering

Opus was approached by the Western Bay of Plenty Lifelines Group to undertake a study of the earthquake hazards affecting the Western Bay of Plenty Region.

Opus undertook a study to identify and map earthquake ground shaking, liquefaction hazards.  The study included collation and review of ground information from published and unpublished reports, and development of a ground class map and earthquake ground shaking maps for two hazard levels and four earthquake scenarios.  Also earthquake liquefaction and consequent ground damage potential was mapped.

The mapping was carried out using a GIS platform.  Opus used GNS Science as sub-consultant to derive ground shaking levels using the National Seismic Hazard Model.

The lifelines group are using the hazards maps to assess the effects of earthquakes on a wide range of lifelines in the Western Bay of Plenty region.
