Opus was appointed by English Heritage to refurbish the Victorian Road Access Bridge to Fort Brockhurst in Gosport Hampshire.
The fort, one of The Palmerston Forts along the south coast, still uses the original wrought iron girder bridge as the main vehicle access. The bridge had corroded over the years and was in very poor condition.
Opus supervised the complete dismantling of all superstructure components which were shipped to Telford for refurbishment. All the original cast iron and wrought iron components were retained wherever possible though with new riveted connections.
The structure was reassembled on site with the roadway re-laid in materials sympathetic to the original design.
