Opus completed the £28 million, Basford-Hough-Shavington Bypass on the A500, part of the east/west route between Crewe and the M6. The 7.5km dual carriageway diverts arterial traffic away from the villages of Shavington and Hough. A ‘before and after’ traffic impact study showed that over 10,000 vehicles per day had been diverted away from these hubs.
Opus provided a full consultancy service from inception through public consultation to acting as The Highways Agency’s site representative during construction. Major engineering achievements included a 195 metre five-span railway over-bridge, seven other over-bridges including a combined foot/cycleway, moving 700,000 cubic meters of earth, and numerous culverts.
The road over Rail Bridge was slid into place on Christmas Day to avoid disruption to the main rail link to and from the North-West of England.
Environmental works included the creation of 12 newt ponds and a badger set, as well as the planting of 19,500 trees
