Young Achiever Award
2007
David Dunlop, Principal Transport Planner, Wellington, New Zealand
As recently as 2005 we had no significant traffic engineering and transportation planning capability in Wellington. Since then our workgroup managers Tim Selby (now based in Perth) and over more recent times David Dunlop, have not only developed a 10-strong team of engineers, planners and modellers but have, with support from others, firmly established it as the “consultant of choice” in the Wellington market through excellent service delivery.
The team is currently doing the two major transportation studies in the region: the Ngauranga Gorge to Airport Study and the SH1 Kapiti Coast Study. Excellent working relationships have also been developed with Land Transport NZ, Kapiti Coast District Council and the Wellington City Council.
David has displayed outstanding leadership. His energy and enthusiasm is an inspiration to others and his ability to respond with urgency to changes in client’s requirements is impressive. David has excellent client relationship building capability and with his technical credibility he very quickly establishes trusting relationships.
Jeremy Gibbons, Transportation Projects Engineer, Hamilton, New Zealand
Jeremy displays strong leadership qualities and is well regarded by staff and external clients alike. He has recently been accepted by Transit as Team Leader on the Katitaki Bypass (fee value approx $1M) clearly demonstrating his ability to manage projects and team members with a high degree of competency.
Jeremy is actively involved in mentoring graduates and readily assists and shares his extensive modelling experience within the Company. He is one of our most senior Paramics modellers and provides a mentoring role to other modellers within the company.
Jeremy has a very positive attitude and readily assists other team members to meet their client deliverables. He readily takes on responsibilities akin to more senior people and regularly fulfils the role of workgroup manager during his manager’s absence.
He has a high level of credibility with clients at both operational and senior management levels.
Chris Davies, Business Manager Environmental Engineering, Dunedin, New Zealand
Chris joined Opus in December 2001 as a graduate. He has progressed very quickly, achieving CPEng registration in a remarkably short period of time. After being appointed senior engineer in 2006, then Work Group Manager in June 2007; Chris was appointed Business Manager, Dunedin in December 2007.
Chris is confident and energetic. He is very talented as a business development leader and project manager. He has very wide internal and external networks. His particular interests in trade waste and small plant design are particular suited to the Dunedin situation.
Chris is highly regarded for his ability to maintain positive relationships with staff and clients. He is skilled at understanding people, and considerate towards others feelings and motivations. Chris’ style of leadership is inclusive, and he is already proving himself as a prime mover in helping to make the South Island operate more like one market, and to provide stronger links between the Dunedin Office, parts of the SI Regional businesses and other parts of our national business.
2006
Theresa Allan, Operations Manager, Greymouth, New Zealand
Theresa has excelled in her role as Operations Manager for our Transit NZ contract. This is a senior position and Theresa has faced up to the challenges and with her very positive can-do attitude she has been very successful and has added considerable value. Theresa has been creative and resourceful in achieving the required results, not only building up a very trustful relationship with our major client but also gaining the trust and support of the team in Greymouth. With Theresa’s attitude, personal sacrifice, commitment and dedication she has played a significant part in enhancing our reputation with Transit and she has excellent promise as a very successful engineer and leader.
Jackie Colliar, Environmental Engineer, Hamilton, New Zealand
Jackie has an excellent reputation for her extremely positive, ‘can do’ attitude and her behaviour clearly supports our values. Jackie’s attitude and work ethic are now recognised by clients as well as within the Company. Over the past twelve months or so she has been asked to step up and to take over from others on three significant projects. Jackie’s influence on all three, and particularly the Thames Coromandel District Council Eastern Seaboard Wastewater Projects, has been exceptional. The Chief Executive received a letter from Gordon Reynolds of Thames Coromandel District Council who clearly has an extremely high regard for Jackie and for the work she has been doing on this project. The performance of the Opus team has been outstanding and Jackie has clearly stepped up to meet the challenges of this demanding project.
2005
Michael Darnell, North Canterbury NMM Team Leader & Asset Management Engineer, Christchurch, New Zealand
Michael took over the role of North Canterbury NMM Team Leader in July 2004, following his transfer from Hamilton to Christchurch. He is a quiet but strong and assertive team leader, who has quickly established excellent rapport with Transit New Zealand. He also has the respect and support of his team and adds excellent value as an integral member of the Christchurch civil engineering office. In addition to his NMM team leader role, Michael also manages the Automated Data Collection (High Speed Data) Contract with Transit New Zealand Head Office. Again, he has built up a strong client relationship and has earned Transit’s confidence for his judgement and engineering abilities. Michael leads by example, he is extremely hard working and committed, and is respected by his peers for his professional demeanour and knowledge which he willingly shares with others.
