Technical Excellence Award - Team

2009

  • SH6: Kawarau River Bridge Team, New Zealand of Russell Nicholls, Ian Walsh, Wolfram Schwarz of Dunedin; Hunter Leece and Reece Gibson of Queenstown

Major structural issues were discovered with the Kawarau River Traffic Bridge and strengthening works were designed and constructed.  The analysis undertaken was extremely detailed and introduced new thoughts and process for the unusual fatigue failure identified with the structure.

Russell Nicholls was our Project Manager with Ian Walsh and Wolfram Schwarz undertaking the analysis and design.  Hunter Leece and Reece Gibson assisted Ian and Wolfram in the supervision of repairs.  Their work was both internally and externally reviewed through workshops to ensure reviewers could correctly understand the issues, analysis, and design.

The Project was very complex and the analysis and remedial design were unique and outside the norm.

  • Hamilton Island Yacht Club Structural Design Team of Sydney, Australia of Peter Allen, Luis Quispe, Will Walburn and Jean Dupavillon

Over the last three years this team from the Sydney office has undertaken some of the most complex structural design for a project of this size ever seen in Australia. The project comprising a new club house and 35 villas is located on Hamilton Island in the Whitsunday Island’s off the Queensland Coast.

The project is now complete and has received rave reviews. It is an absolutely stunning building and has already featured on national television in Australia.  It presents a strong nautical theme with various components cantilevered out over the water.  Opus provided structural design services for Walter Barda Architects in Sydney.

  • Geotechnics and Risk Team of Wellington, New Zealand of Pathmanathan Brabhaharan, Alexei Murashev, Janine O'Dea, David Stewart, Jayne Flack, Siva Arumugam, Janet Duxfield, Kelly Walker, Campbell Keepa, Tiffany Krall, Innes Hutchison, and Simon McCrone
