Opus is now able to provide clients with land contamination assessment reports under the National Quality Mark Scheme for Land Contamination Management (NQMS), following Jon English’s (Technical Principal – Contaminated Land) appointment as a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP).
The NQMS initiative was launched by industry at the beginning of the year to improve the quality of contaminated land technical reports submitted in support of planning applications and other regulatory regimes.
Reports signed off by a SQP will carry the Quality Mark and will be subjected to less scrutiny by Local Authority and Environment Agency regulators. The SQP will be required to sign a declaration for each report confirming that the work has been carried out by capable people; the data has been reviewed and is factually correct; that the interpretation and conclusions of the reports are reasonable; and that any proposals to mitigate risks are appropriate.
The NQMS is supported by the Environment Agency, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and from now on all contamination assessment reports procured by the Environment Agency will need to carry the NQMS Quality Mark.
