Civil Engineering

Civil engineering represents a large portion of Opus staffing and workload, involving planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure assets.  Facilities might include buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, airports, railways, dams, communication and power transmission structures, and structures for water supply and wastewater and disposal systems.

Civil engineering projects which have had Opus involvement are located in all four countries where Opus has permanent offices and in many other places around the world.  Opus has been recognised in many of these projects as making a significant contribution to new technologies and techniques and for finding unique solutions to the challenges faced and in addressing the economic, social and environmental aspects of the projects.  Many of the projects worked on involve application of multiple skills to formulate solutions that are unique and represent added value to the clients and the communities in which they are located.

Dragon International Studios, Llanilid, United Kingdom

Opus is engaged in work at Dragon International Studios, dubbed ‘Valleywood’ in Llanilid, South Wales.
Opus’ work on this project began with the design of the first phase of the Llanharan Bypass, which opens up access to the site; this led to the design of two further phases and infrastructure works at the nearby 17.5 hectare residential development.
Excellent service delivery in these initial stages has been instrumental in Opus’ commission for the structural design of four television studios, referred to as ‘silent sound stages’. In addition, Opus has been commissioned for work on the main access road, car park and service yards for the studios.

A500 Basford-Haugh-Shavington Bypass, United Kingdom

Opus completed the £28 million, Basford-Hough-Shavington Bypass on the A500, part of the east/west route between Crewe and the M6.  The 7.5km dual carriageway diverts arterial traffic away from the villages of Shavington and Hough.  A ‘before and after’ traffic impact study showed that over 10,000 vehicles per day had been diverted away from these hubs.
